Remove dirt from the mouth and nose quickly and maintain a clear airway. Drowning can easily cause asphyxiation, leading to hypoxic cardiac arrest. Therefore, oxygen supply is the primary goal of treatment for drowning patients, so the A-B-C (open airway – artificial respiration – compressions) sequence of first aid is recommended. Specifically, 5 artificial respirations followed by 30 chest compressions, followed by 2 artificial respirations, followed by 30 chest compressions, and then repeat the 2:30 cycle.
