1.What is retinopathy of prematurity Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a bilateral disease of the eyes caused by abnormal retinal angiogenesis in preterm infants, especially those with very low birth weight, with a prognosis ranging from normal to blindness. The smaller the gestational age and weight, the higher the incidence of ROP. Infants born at less than 30 weeks and weighing less than 1,500 grams are generally more susceptible to the disease, and the incidence is more than 90% for infants weighing less than 750 grams. With the improvement of the level of neonatal resuscitation in China, the incidence of ROP has increased accordingly, as the preterm infants who were not viable have survived. 3. The significance of ROP screening in preterm infants In developed countries, all preterm infants are screened for ROP, which has greatly reduced the incidence and saved the vision of many preterm infants. In April 2004, China’s Ministry of Health formulated the “Guidelines for the Treatment of Premature Infants with Oxygen and Prevention of Retinopathy of Prematurity” for this purpose, requiring hospitals at all levels nationwide to carry out this program. 4.Where to go for ROP screening At present, only a few hospitals in the western region have professional ROP screening equipment. In order to better serve the families of preterm infants, the ophthalmology department of Xi’an No. 4 Hospital has introduced the American original RetCam II wide area retinal digital image system, which has been selected as the standard equipment for ROP screening by the International Academy of Ophthalmology. 5. Screening appointment process Families can make an appointment at the pediatric ophthalmology clinic in advance.
