Correlation between chickenpox and shingles

Chickenpox and shingles are caused by the same virus, the varicella zoster virus, which is clinically manifested as chickenpox when first infected. Both varicella and herpes zoster contain a large amount of virus in the herpes fluid and are contagious and can be transmitted through the respiratory tract or by contact. Both must be isolated until all the herpes fluid has dried and crusted over.
