Poria, Almond and Licorice Soup is from “The Essentials of the Golden Chamber”. Poria resolves phlegm and expels water, almonds subdues qi, and licorice eases the middle and strengthens the spleen, and the combination of the drugs has the effect of removing dampness and subduing qi. In the original book, it was used to treat chest paralysis (stuffy pain in the chest), gas congestion in the chest, and shortness of breath. Nowadays, it can be used clinically to treat cold pain in the lower limbs, chest tightness, dizziness, dysuria (unsmooth urination), palpitation (rapid heartbeat, often accompanied by panic), excessive sweating, and moistening of the pulse.
