Acupuncture for optic nerve atrophy

Optic nerve atrophy has a complex etiology and a lingering course, and is a refractory eye disease. It can be caused by a variety of reasons, such as inflammation, ischemia, compression, trauma, poisoning, glaucoma, congenital factors, nutritional disorders, metabolic, demyelination and hereditary diseases, etc. The result is varying degrees of impairment of visual function and pale and disc coloration of the fundus. Complete atrophy of the nerve fibers is irreversible. Except for optic neuropathy caused by trauma and tumor compression, which may recover after surgical treatment to remove the compression, there is no exact and effective treatment for optic nerve atrophy in Western medicine, and the prognosis is very poor. However, in recent years, some scholars believe that as long as the primary lesion (if the cause is clear) is found in time and treated as early as possible, or if a combination of Chinese and Western medicine is actively used, there is a chance to restore or improve the visual function, or at least maintain the original visual function. Optic nerve atrophy is one of the common blindness-causing factors in clinical practice. Acupuncture has the advantages of easy operation, reliable efficacy, low cost and no serious adverse reactions in the treatment of optic nerve atrophy, which is a better treatment method with TCM characteristics and easily accepted by patients. Continuous acupuncture treatment can improve blood circulation in the eye, affect local metabolism, unblock the eye-loop qi and blood, improve and restore the excitability of part of the optic nerve that is in low function, thus improving the conduction function of the optic nerve and promoting the repair of the optic nerve, which can increase visual acuity and improve visual function.
