As the disease progresses, abnormal liver function with cholestatic jaundice as the main alteration occurs. Serum bilirubin is generally moderately elevated, with a predominant increase in direct bilirubin, serum cholesterol may be elevated, and alkaline phosphatase and γ-glutamyltransferase are mostly elevated before the onset of jaundice and other symptoms. If primary biliary cirrhosis is diagnosed, early standardized treatment is recommended to reduce the adverse effects of the disease.
