What are the treatment options for adolescent hernia?

Adolescent hernia refers to hernia before marriage and childbirth, including infancy, adolescence and post-pubertal age. In the case of infantile hernia, surgery can be considered after 6 months of age, if physically possible, and no later than 3 years of age. The main reason for this is that the child will start kindergarten after the age of 3, and the different performance from other children will affect the psychological development. The main surgical procedure is a small incisional hernia bursa ligation. This surgical procedure is also suitable for spermatic cord and testicular syringomyelia. These two conditions are congenital hiatal hernias. Laparoscopic surgery may also be considered in male children with better family conditions. Laparoscopic hernia repair is preferred for inguinal hernias in early childhood and adolescence. Because the child is developing during this period, the procedure needs to repair the abdominal wall defect without damaging or affecting the spermatic cord and vas deferens. Open surgical repair can also be considered in female patients during this period. After puberty and before childbirth, this is the period when the patient has basically completed development but has not yet given birth. The procedure is mainly a tension-free repair under local anesthesia, supplemented by a non-adhesive patch to reduce the impact on reproductive function.
