Recently, the Department of Pediatric Surgery of Qilu Hospital of Shandong University (Qingdao) successfully performed a trans-laparoscopic repair of a huge left diaphragmatic hernia, which is the first minimally invasive procedure in major hospitals in Qingdao. One day in September, a 1-year-old 3-month-old girl came to the pediatric surgery clinic of Qilu Hospital of Shandong University (Qingdao) with “vomiting for 3 days”, and was diagnosed with “left diaphragmatic hernia and aspiration pneumonia” after lung auscultation and chest X-ray examination, and was admitted to the hospital for pneumonia control. After evaluating the child’s condition, Zhang Lei, Director of Pediatric Surgery, decided to perform a diaphragmatic hernia repair for the child. In order to reduce the trauma of the surgery, the child’s family asked experts and professors from other major hospitals on the island, but none of them could perform minimally invasive surgery on the child. After the pneumonia was controlled and stabilized, the child was pushed into the operating room. After only two hours of surgery, the operation was successfully completed, during which not only the diaphragmatic hernia repair was completed, but also the child’s left distended lung was satisfied. The day after the surgery, a CT scan of the patient’s intrapulmonary sticky lung showed a satisfactory surgical result. The successful completion of the laparoscopic diaphragmatic hernia repair marked another major advancement in minimally invasive pediatric surgery, which cannot be performed in other hospitals on the island since the opening of the hospital.
