The disadvantages of taking large quantities of calcium tablets over a long period of time are that they lead to constipation, increase the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and increase the probability of urinary calculi.
1. Easily lead to constipation: long-term use of large quantities of calcium tablets may lead to gastrointestinal tract peristalsis slow down, thus triggering constipation. This is due to the fact that calcium is easy to combine with fat in the intestines to form calcium soap, inhibiting intestinal peristalsis.
2. Increase the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases: excessive intake of calcium can easily lead to hypercalcemia, excessive calcium deposition in the blood in the blood vessel wall, which may lead to atherosclerosis, thus increasing the risk of stroke, coronary heart disease and other cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.
3. Increase the probability of urinary stones: a large amount of calcium will increase the risk of stones, such as kidney stones, bladder stones and so on. A significant portion of urinary stones are composed of calcium oxalate.
Calcium supplementation has other risks, such as causing electrolyte disorders. It is recommended that calcium supplements need to be taken under a doctor’s supervision to avoid the occurrence of appropriate side effects that can jeopardize human health.
