We often see depression or anxiety on TV or movies and think that those diseases are far away from us, but in fact, there are not many patients suffering from these diseases in the clinic. First of all, patients suffering from cerebrovascular disease, Parkinson’s syndrome, diabetes, and post-coronary surgery are prone to anxiety and depression, with a prevalence of about 30-40%; patients suffering from insomnia and vertigo are often combined with anxiety. For example, the patient presents with a feeling of dizziness and heaviness after one or several episodes of vertigo, and a feeling of unsteadiness in walking. In fact, this is a symptom of anticipatory anxiety. On the one hand, the vestibular function of the inner ear has not fully recovered, and on the other hand, the patient worries about the fear of reoccurrence of the pain. This non-vertigo symptom can also occur. We can look at a few cases Case 1: Li, 48 years old, had vertigo attacks for 2 months with 2 episodes, and for the last 3 weeks, he was dizzy and unsteady on his feet and did not dare to go out and walk. Multiple examinations of cranial MRI, ultrasound cervical vessels were not problematic, and only one side of peripheral vestibular examination was low. There were no positive signs on neurological examination. However, the patient’s expression was painful and his life and work were greatly affected. After explaining and communicating with the patient, some anti-anxiety drugs were given and the symptoms gradually subsided. Case 2: Zhang, 82 years old, a retired cadre. Dizziness, drowsiness, unstable walking for 2-3 years, gradually aggravated in the past year, needing to eat a cane to walk, afraid to go out, while depressed, weakness, self-conscious lack of energy to do things, memory loss. The patient had lacunar cerebral infarction for many years, diabetes mellitus and coronary artery disease. After communication with the patient, he was given the antidepressant Prozac and some anxiolytic drugs. After 2 weeks of medication, the patient felt better and the symptoms disappeared after 6 weeks. The patient’s mood and mental state changed a lot, and he was energetic and joking naturally. He looked like a completely different person to the doctor. So it seems that depression and anxiety do not seem far away from us, but this disease is not terrible, as long as you can correctly understand and take the appropriate treatment, you can definitely stay away from those melancholy days.
