Cyclosporine is an immunosuppressive drug that is toxic to the kidneys and inhibits uric acid excretion. This leads to an increase in the concentration of uric acid in the blood, causing hyperuricaemia. In turn, hyperuricaemia can cause gout. When gout develops, urate deposits occur, causing swelling of the joints and resulting in pain.
