There is a possibility of gouty ankle osteoarthritis. Gouty ankle arthritis tends to present with recurrent severe pain at night, swollen joints and may be associated with morning stiffness and discomfort, and is commonly seen in middle-aged and older men. Examination of the ankle reveals symmetrical redness and swelling in many joints and a hard bulge in the joint, known as a gouty stone. Uric acid crystals can be obtained by puncture of the joint cavity. Patients are advised to eat less beef, mutton, soybeans and other high purine foods, keep warm and visit the hospital promptly.
