There is a possibility of gouty ankle osteoarthritis. Gouty ankle arthritis mostly presents with recurrent severe pain at night, swollen joints and may be associated with morning stiffness and discomfort, commonly in middle-aged and older men.
Examination of the ankle will often reveal symmetrical redness and swelling of multiple joints, and hard elevations of the joints, i.e. gout stones, are seen. Uric acid crystals can be obtained by puncture of the joint cavity.
Patients are advised to eat less of high purine foods such as beef, lamb and soybeans, to keep warm and to seek prompt medical attention.
