Most mitral stenoses in adults are usually caused by rheumatic fever invasion, but there can be no typical rheumatic fever changes in the early stages.
Such patients, however, are susceptible to rheumatic fever, so prophylactic use of drugs for rheumatic fever, such as benzathine penicillin, or even lifelong prophylaxis, is indicated.
