Lorazepam and oxazepam are different in structure, indications, pharmacokinetics, and have the potential for serious consequences, prohibiting replacement at any time.
1. Structure: The general structure of the two is similar, but lorazepam has one more chlorine atom on the benzene ring of the side chain than oxazepam. This also makes them different in their potency and biometabolism, although both belong to the benzodiazepine class of drugs. In addition, lorazepam was marketed 14 years later than oxazepam.
2. Indications: domestic and foreign indications are different. In China, lorazepam is mainly for anxiety states, insomnia caused by anxiety or emotional stress; oxazepam is mainly for alcohol withdrawal syndrome, anxiety, insomnia. The difference between the two still exists.
In foreign countries, lorazepam can also be used to treat agitated states, epilepsy, convulsions, catatonia and so on. More indications than oxazepam.
3. Pharmacokinetics: oxazepam peak 3 hours, half-life 8.2 hours. Lorazepam has a peak of 2 hours and a half-life of 12-18 hours. Lorazepam’s onset of action and duration are superior to that of oxazepam, as reported in relevant literature.
4. Different benzodiazepines are replaced for short-term use because of differences in the way they are metabolized, and drug interactions can lead to serious adverse reactions such as sedation, respiratory depression, and coma. Replacement at any time is strictly prohibited. The use of medication needs to strictly follow the guidance of the physician, do not decide on your own, so as not to cause serious adverse consequences.
