Why is hepatitis B fickle?

The disease types of hepatitis B can include almost all clinical types of liver disease. They can range from acute hepatitis, which is curable, to chronic infections that last a lifetime, from hepatitis B virus carriage, which has little to no effect on the body, to fatal liver failure. This range of clinical types is interchangeable. In addition to the familiar “slow hepatitis B – cirrhosis – liver cancer” trilogy, a small number of acutely infected patients also become chronically infected; conversely, a very small number of chronically infected patients also become chronically infected. On the contrary, there are very few “lucky” people with chronic infection who can spontaneously clear the hepatitis B virus and obtain clinical recovery. Therefore, once we find out that we have signs of hepatitis B virus infection, we should see a hepatologist to find out what clinical type we are, whether we need treatment now, what we need to pay attention to in our life, and how to conduct regular review. This is the only way to minimize the risk of adverse outcomes from hepatitis B.
