Acupuncture treatment after facial paralysis is usually started after the condition is stabilized, and most patients can gradually recover in about two months. Facial paralysis mostly refers to peripheral facial nerve paralysis, mostly due to autoimmune reaction caused by viral infection. This leads to localized facial nerve trophic vasospasm and facial nerve ischemia and edema. The facial nerve travels in the facial nerve canal, and facial nerve edema can lead to compression, demyelination, and in severe cases, axonal degeneration. Therefore, early treatment focuses on reducing facial nerve edema, reducing immune response, and nutritional nerve therapy. Acupuncture treatment is usually started after the patient’s condition is stabilized. Acupuncture treatment has the effect of driving away wind and eliminating evil spirits and energizing the meridians and collaterals, and acupuncture usually makes the patient’s condition improve significantly within a few weeks, and most of the patients will need about two months if they are to recover completely. Acupuncture treatment is commonly used in China, but there is no convincing evidence yet, and it is currently only used as one of the means of adjuvant treatment.
