Hypercarotenemia is also known as blood carotenoid excess. It is a yellowing of the skin caused mainly by excessive carotene levels in the blood. There are three main causes of hypercarotenemia: excessive carotenoid consumption, carotenoid metabolism disorders and hyperlipidemia, with excessive carotenoid intake being the most common cause. Carotenoid metabolism disorders can lead to excessive carotenoid deposition in the blood. In patients with hyperlipidemia, there is an excess of carotenoids dissolved in blood lipids. In general, yellowish skin staining without sclera staining is an important feature of hypercarotenemia. Hypercarotenemia also has to exclude yellow pigmentation caused by some drugs or chemicals, such as saffron, miparin, fluorescein, dinitrophen, and zebrano yellow, and patients often have a history of taking these drugs.
