What is lower limb edema

Lower extremity edema refers to edematous changes in the entire lower extremity or in one part of the lower extremity. The clinical presentation will show that the edematous area tends to lose its wrinkles, have a shiny surface, and can even be clearly seen to be swollen. If it occurs on the face of the ankle, it may be difficult to put on the shoes. Then, if you press a certain area, that is, the area of edema, with your hand, you will find a clear depression, and this situation can confirm that it is lower extremity edema. There are many causes of lower limb edema, and the most common one in clinical practice is heart failure. After heart failure, it will lead to stasis of blood in the body circulation, so edema will appear in the lower part of the body, most commonly in both lower limbs. Then there is renal insufficiency and hypoproteinemia. This condition can also lead to the accumulation of fluid in the intertissue fluid, which can also lead to edema in the lower extremities. Certain drugs may also cause edema, for example, there is a class of antihypertensive drugs amlodipine and nifedipine, and sometimes edema of the lower extremities may also occur.
