The patient lies flat on the examination bed with legs flexed to be able to keep the patient’s abdominal wall muscles relaxed. The examiner generally occupies the right side of the patient and starts the examination from the abdomen where there is no lesion, usually with four fingers together, and palpates the patient’s abdomen with the belly of the four fingers. If a mass is palpated in the abdomen, the location, size, texture, borders, mobility and the presence of pressure pain are described. If the patient’s abdomen is palpated with inflammation and pain, describe the location of the pain, the tension of the abdominal muscles, whether it is soft, tense or resistant, or even if there is rebound pain.
