Ascites caused by early stage liver cancer can disappear after effective treatment, but ascites caused by advanced stage liver cancer is usually difficult to be cured completely and may recur. Liver cancer will impair liver function, increase portal vein pressure and decrease plasma albumin level, which makes body fluids penetrate out of blood vessels, resulting in abdominal fluid accumulation. Ascites can be temporarily eliminated by infusion of albumin, use of spironolactone, furosemide and other diuretics. Whether ascites can be completely cured is also related to whether the primary disease can be cured. If the liver cancer is in early stage, it can be cured by timely surgery and liver transplantation, and the ascites may be cured. However, if the liver cancer is in middle or late stage, it is difficult to be cured. Even if the ascites can be temporarily disappeared through effective treatment, the ascites will appear again and again with the change of disease. Therefore, regular medical checkups should be conducted to detect liver diseases and treat them in time to avoid further aggravation of the condition or even development into cancer.
