Can constipation also be treated surgically?

First of all, constipation requiring surgical intervention is of a more serious type. Milder or occasional constipation can be relieved by dietary regulation, Chinese herbal medicine, or the use of some lubricants such as corkage. In severe cases, these treatments are often ineffective and laxatives must be taken in order to pass the stool, while mental pain and anxiety are so great that some patients may even suffer from depression. The two main types of constipation in the surgical category are slow transmission constipation and outlet obstruction constipation. The main difference in symptoms is that patients with slow-transit constipation often have no bowel movements for many days and have very dry stools, while patients with outlet-obstructed constipation often have bowel movements every day but have great difficulty in passing stools; slow-transit constipation can be diagnosed by a colonic transmission test, while outlet-obstructed constipation can be diagnosed by a fecal imaging. In patients with slow-transit constipation, with the prolongation of the disease and the long-term stimulation of laxatives, the colon becomes diseased, and we call it adult human megacolon, which is characterized by severe dilatation of the colon and neurological lesions. Such patients can be treated by subtotal colectomy after a clear diagnosis. With the improvement of people’s living standards and medical care, people are becoming more and more concerned about the quality of life. Therefore, the understanding of chronic constipation is also getting deeper and deeper, and medical science has found that the quality of life of these patients is seriously low, and some of them even seriously affect their working life. Therefore, we hope that patients with such problems can pay attention to their condition and seek timely medical treatment.
