The efficacy of silymarin in clinical practice is to clear away heat and detoxify the toxin (removing heat and toxin from the body), and dredge the liver and gallbladder (dredging the qi of the liver and gallbladder), treating the symptoms of liver and gallbladder dampness-heat (dampness-heat and evil qi deposited in the liver and gallbladder). As a kind of traditional Chinese medicine, because of its cool nature, it can clear heat and remove toxins, protect the liver and benefit the gallbladder, so it is mainly used to treat the symptoms caused by damp-heat of the liver and gallbladder, such as pain in the abdomen and ribs, irritability, limb heaviness (weakness of the limbs and sinking of the hair), mucus in the mouth, jaundice, bitter taste of the mouth, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, mucus in the stools, yellowish and greasy on the tongue with a red coating and slippery pulse, and so on. The adverse effects and contraindications of silymarin are not clear at this time, and it is recommended that a doctor be consulted first if medication is needed.
