HPV 16 positivity can turn negative in as little as eight months, because most high-risk HPV infections are transient infections. However, high-risk HPV infections that persist may cause lesions in the cervical epithelium, so colposcopy is recommended to rule out lesions in the cervical epithelium in the presence of HPV infection. If the colposcopy is negative, it is recommended that a review be given three months, six months, and one year after the colposcopy, respectively. If the test result is positive, further treatment needs to be given according to the result.
