How to have a review after kidney cancer surgery?

Kidney cancer is a common malignant tumor in the urinary system. For early stage kidney cancer, if the tumor is less than 4 cm, laparoscopic partial resection can be performed, while for middle and advanced stage kidney cancer, radical nephrectomy can be performed. No matter partial or radical nephrectomy is performed, postoperative review is very important! Through the review, we can understand how the whole body condition and whether there is recurrence and metastasis of tumor. The most worrying issue for kidney cancer patients after surgery is the recurrence and metastasis of tumor. Recurrence refers to the tumor growing again in the original site or original kidney, while metastasis refers to the appearance of tumor in distant organs such as lung, bone, brain, liver and lymph nodes. Recurrence and metastasis of kidney cancer are closely related to the stage, grade and pathological type of the tumor! Since the common metastatic sites of kidney cancer are lung and bone in order, the postoperative review items mainly include the following, blood routine, liver and kidney function, abdominal ultrasound and abdominal CT to understand whether there are abdominal solid organs and abdominal lymph node metastasis, chest X-ray and chest CT to exclude whether there are lung metastatic lesions. A whole-body bone scan can be performed to find out whether there are metastases in the bones of the whole body, which is needed if the patient complains of back pain or bone pain after surgery. PET-CT can also be used to find and detect postoperative metastases, but it is expensive and not a routine examination. 2. Time and plan of postoperative review For patients after partial nephrectomy, if cytokine immunotherapy with interferon or interleukin is to be carried out, the first postoperative review can be carried out one month after discharge from hospital, mainly to check blood routine and blood biochemistry, as well as abdominal ultrasound to help determine whether immunotherapy can be started. An abdominal CT examination is also performed three months after surgery to understand the recovery of the kidney after surgery. For post-radical surgery patients, routine blood tests, blood biochemistry, chest X-ray, abdominal ultrasound and CT can be performed three months after surgery. Thereafter, both partial nephrectomy patients and radical nephrectomy patients are better to have the above examinations once every six months or once a year. The above examinations can help patients to monitor well for the presence of recurrence and metastasis after surgery, so that the next step of treatment can be taken.
