Beware of cataracts caused by myopia

A while ago, Master Wang, who lives in Ningbo Xiaogang, knew that his sister had taken off her glasses, which were as thick as beer bottles, for many years. So Master Wang thought that he was also highly myopic and his vision was blurred since he was a child, so he felt that now that the economic conditions were better, he thought that there was a cure for high myopia. So, accompanied by his sister, he found Director Gong Yan with great joy, but he didn’t know that once he was examined, he found that there was no light perception in his right eye, and the cataract in his right eye (overripe stage) and the lesion in the fundus of his eye was incurable. The vision of the left eye was only the immediate index, and even the IOL degree was difficult to measure accurately. It was found that there were more than 3,000 degrees of myopia, and the crystal was cloudy and dark brown, and the fundus could not be seen clearly at all.

Considering that Master Wang was only in his 50s and still needed to continue working, Director Gong Yan then conducted relevant examinations, eye evaluations and pre-operative communication with his family. After cataract ultrasound emulsification with toric IOL implantation, Master Wang was able to see the appearance of his loved ones on the first day after surgery, and his corrected vision reached 0.3 on the second day. I can see my grandson who will be born soon.

According to a survey conducted by the Key Laboratory of Myopia of the Ministry of Health, less than 10% of cataracts are caused by high myopia, but the recent survey results are surprising. 39% of cataract patients are caused by high myopia, which means that on average, 4 out of 10 cataract patients have high myopia, which is mind-boggling.

Cataracts caused by high myopia are called nuclear cataracts, and their clouding occurs mainly in the nucleus of the lens, and the color of the nucleus gradually changes from yellowish brown to brown or dark brown as the disease develops. Modern people receive a lot of information in their work and study, and 82% of the content needs to use the eyes as a medium. As a result, the more the eyes are used, the greater the likelihood of myopia and the increased chance of more serious eye diseases. In our country, more than half of the blindness is due to cataracts.

Despite this, the notion that cataracts only occur in old age continues to blind many young people to the fact that high myopia causes cataracts. When they develop presbyopia and cataracts at the age of 32-45, they do not seek medical advice in time, thinking that they are only temporary symptoms and do not pay enough attention to them, which leads to serious complications. Just like Master Wang of Xiaogang, his right eye missed the treatment period, leading to serious complications like blindness.

Director Gong Yan believes that cataracts must be detected and treated early. For those who have high myopia, special attention should be paid to avoid too strong ultraviolet radiation, eat more vitamin-rich foods such as carrots, have accurate optometry and physical exercise in moderation.

Special reminder: myopia usually stabilizes around the age of 20. If you find that your glasses suddenly deepen when you are in your 40s or 50s, it is likely to be a manifestation of cataract and you must seek medical attention as soon as possible.
