Can a mother with hepatitis B breastfeed her child?

Viral hepatitis B is a worldwide disease caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV). The incidence rate is high in developing countries, and according to statistics, there are about 350 million hepatitis B virus surface antigen-positive people in the world, of which about 120 million are in China. Moreover, nearly 1/4 of hepatitis B cases in China are caused by mother-to-child transmission, so it has long been widely believed that mothers with hepatitis B cannot breastfeed their children. However, we know that breast milk is the most ideal nutritional food and drink for infants, which contains all the nutritional elements needed for infants’ growth and development from 4 to 6 months, and is suitable for infants’ gastrointestinal digestion and absorption. According to research, the disease resistance of children fed through breastfeeding is higher than that of artificially fed children. So is it possible for mothers with hepatitis B to breastfeed their children? This is a question that many mothers with hepatitis B are concerned about. The answer to this question has always been two opinions, one believes that the content of virus in the mother’s milk is far less than that in the blood, plus the transmission of hepatitis B virus is mainly through the blood, so the newborn can be breastfed after the birth of hepatitis B vaccine. Another viewpoint is that in order to reduce the chance of transmission, it is better for mothers infected with hepatitis B virus not to breastfeed. In recent years, more and more experts and scholars advocate that breastfeeding can be done in the case of hepatitis B vaccination plus hepatitis B immunoglobulin prophylaxis, based on the fact that when comparing the rate of hepatitis B infection between breastfed and artificially fed children, it was found that the chances of contracting hepatitis B in the two groups were the same, and that breastfeeding did not increase the chances of hepatitis B infection. Hepatitis B mothers can generally breastfeed, but should pay attention to the following situations: 1, the mother’s serum viral load is high, and in the active stage of the disease should not be breastfed; 2, due to the hepatitis B virus is mainly transmitted through the blood, if the baby’s oral cavity, throat, esophagus, gastrointestinal mucosa and other places have breaks, ulcers, breast milk in the hepatitis B virus will be thus entered into the blood circulation, and may induce hepatitis B infection; 3, the mother’s nipple Ruptured nipples should also be temporarily stopped breastfeeding; 4, mothers who are receiving nucleoside analog antiviral therapy, because the drug can be excreted from the milk, so can not breastfeeding. It should be pointed out that HBVDNA positive mother after all, there is viral replication in the body, should try to minimize excessive contact with the child’s body, their own toiletries, tableware should be diligent disinfection, and to ensure that the baby’s supplies and absolute isolation, in order to reduce the chances of the child’s infection.
