Types of vascular dementia

  1. Multi-infarct dementia. It is dementia due to multiple infarct foci, and the lesions can accumulate in the cortical, subcortical and basal ganglia areas. There are often recurrent clinical episodes of cerebrovascular disease, as well as neurological and psychiatric symptoms left after each episode, which can lead to severe mental decline.  2.Large cerebral infarct dementia. Patients with large cerebral infarction will be left with different degrees of neuropsychiatric abnormalities, including dementia, loss of work and life skills, etc.  3.Subcortical atherosclerotic encephalopathy. Because of arteriosclerosis, diffuse lesions occur in the white matter of the brain, resulting in dementia. It is characterized by diminished intelligence, gait disorders, urinary incontinence, swallowing difficulties, coughing and choking on water, slurred speech, etc.  4.Dementia due to infarction at special sites. It refers to the infarct foci located in areas with important relationship with cognitive function, which will cause aphasia, memory deficits, visual impairment, etc. .  5.Hemorrhagic dementia. Dementia due to chronic subdural hematoma, subarachnoid hemorrhage, cerebral hemorrhage.
