Do you have to sleep sitting up after laser repair of retinal tears?

It is not always necessary to sit and sleep after a retinal tear has been repaired by laser. If a dry retinal tear exists, laser treatment is usually needed to close the tear, i.e., to repair the tear and prevent the formation of a retinal detachment. In general, the laser repair of a retinal tear does not require sleeping in a sitting position, but rather in a normal lying position. If intravitreal hemorrhage is detected during laser repair, the patient is usually required to sleep in a sitting position in order to allow the hemorrhage to be deposited underneath the eyeball as soon as possible under the effect of gravity to facilitate its absorption and to prevent the hemorrhage from obscuring the macula and affecting the patient’s vision. It is important to consult with your doctor as to whether or not you need to sleep in a sitting position after laser repair of a retinal tear.
