Calf cramps when playing basketball are mostly due to excessive fatigue or strong contraction of the calf muscles. Patients should immediately stop the activity, rest in place and stretch the local muscles, stand using the leg muscles on the side where the cramp occurs, bend the toes upwards and stretch the foot, apply heat or massage the local calf muscles, replenish enough energy and water and do not continue with basketball activities.
Significant relief from calf cramps can usually be obtained after trying the above methods. If symptoms persist without relief or if calf cramps recur, prompt hospital consultation is recommended to identify the cause and provide symptomatic treatment.
