Be on the lookout for strokes

The incidence of stroke in China is rising at a rate of 9%, and it is getting younger and younger, and is called the “first killer”. Every 12 seconds there is a new stroke patient, every 21 seconds there is a stroke patient death, stroke is already the first major disabling and fatal disease. According to some data, one out of every six people in China suffers from stroke. 15% of people over 40 years old are at high risk of stroke. Stroke is defined as a sudden cerebral blood circulation disorder resulting in focal neurological deficits, even with impaired consciousness, with symptoms and signs lasting more than 24 hours, also known as cerebrovascular accident or stroke. According to the nature of the pathology, it can be divided into ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. If patients are recognized early, the occurrence of stroke sequelae can be reduced and avoided. When the following symptoms occur, we should highly suspect stroke and deal with it promptly. Sudden onset of numbness or weakness of one side of the face or one limb Sudden onset of slurred speech or impaired comprehension Sudden onset of blurred vision in one or both eyes or double vision Sudden onset of unsteady walking, dizziness accompanied by numbness and weakness of limbs Sudden onset of unexplained drooping of the eyelids, severe headache, and stiffness of the neck We can help memorize this with an English word, FAST, which means: F: Faceisuneven(出现面瘫/口角歪斜), A: Armisweak(出现肢体无力), S: Speechisstrange(出现言清清), T: Timetocall(迅速求助). Once a stroke occurs, it is important to do the “three right”. First, the right time: time is the brain. Every 30-minute delay in getting a patient to a hospital can result in severe disability or death in 12% of patients. Second, the right hospital: choose the nearest stroke center and get the patient there as fast as possible. Third, the right treatment: receive intravenous thrombolysis within 4.5 hours and arterial thrombolysis within 6-8 hours. Stroke treatment should always include ASA therapy as well as glycemic control. ASA therapy refers to antiplatelet therapy, plaque stabilizing lipid-lowering therapy, and antihypertensive therapy. Only when the whole society has a comprehensive understanding of stroke and pays enough attention to it, the incidence of stroke in China can have a downward turning point. Healthy China needs all of us to work together, let’s pay attention to stroke together and make unremitting efforts for the health of all people!
