What are tonsilloliths?

Tonsil stones are mainly formed by the hardening of residues of necrotic cells, mucus, saliva and food. The number of tonsil stones, more or less, varies. They usually have no specific symptoms, but mainly cause an unpleasant odor in the mouth and induce tonsillitis.

The surface of the tonsils is not smooth, but consists of many small, uneven pits and tunnels that go deep into the tonsils. This surface structure makes it easy for the tonsils to harbor dirt and grime. Necrotic tissue from the tonsils, saliva from the mouth, and debris that is not cleaned up after eating may remain on the surface of the tonsils. When the water in these residues is dried out, they become hard and adhere to the surface of the tonsils to form tonsil stones. It can be gray, off-white, or white in color.

In general, tonsil stones do not cause any specific symptoms. It mainly causes an unbearable odor. This happens mainly because bacteria or other pathogens multiply as debris continues to collect on the surface of the tonsils. In the process of decomposing the residue, a pungent odor appears. People who usually have bad breath need to pay attention to the presence of stones in the tonsils. When the resistance of the human organism decreases, pathogens invade the body and tonsillitis occurs causing pain, fever and other problems.

Tonsil stones are important to prevent, and the focus of prevention is on good oral hygiene. You should brush your teeth at least twice in the morning and twice in the evening, and rinse your mouth after meals to keep your mouth clean and reduce the occurrence of stones.
