What causes a displaced stomach?

Gastric displacement is the result of gastric torsion (volvulusofstomach) as a disorder of the mechanism of fixation of the normal position of the stomach or a lesion of its adjacent organs. Gastric torsion in newborns is a congenital malformation that may be associated with poor rotation of the small intestine, which causes mal fixation of the stomach by relaxing the gastrosplenic or gastrocolic ligaments. Most can correct themselves as the infant grows and develops. In adults, most gastric torsions have anatomical factors that are triggered by different triggers. The normal position of the stomach depends mainly on the fixation of the lower esophagus and the pylorus. The hepatogastric and gastrocolic ligaments and the gastrosplenic ligaments also play a role in the fixation of the large and small curves of the stomach. Larger esophageal hiatal hernia, septal hernia, septal bulge and excessive laxity of the lateral peritoneum of the descending duodenum make the lower end of the esophagus and the pylorus at the esophageal hiatal hernia not easily fixed. In addition, gastric prolapse and ligaments on the side of the greater and lesser curvatures of the stomach are lax or too long, which are anatomical factors in the development of gastric torsion. Acute gastric dilatation, acute colonic distension, overeating, violent vomiting and gastric retroperistalsis can become the driving force for the sudden change in the position of the stomach, so it is often the trigger for acute gastric torsion. Shenzhen Pengcheng gastrointestinal experts pointed out that the inflammation and adhesions around the stomach can pull the stomach wall and make it fixed in an abnormal position and twist, these lesions are often the cause of chronic gastric torsion.
