What is low plasma renin activity?

Low plasma renin activity may be caused by physiological factors or pathological factors, such as aldosteronism and hyperkalemia.

1. Physiological factors: low plasma renin activity due to increased blood volume caused by drinking more water; low plasma renin activity can also occur during ovulation; taking certain drugs can also lead to reduced renin activity.

2. Pathologic factors

(1) Aldosteronism: it is due to adrenal hyperplasia, or suffering from aldosterone-secreting tumors, etc., so that aldosterone secretion increases and plasma renin activity is low. It may be accompanied by hypertension and hypokalemia. Some patients show symptoms such as dizziness, headache, limb numbness and muscle weakness.

(2) Hyperkalemia: It can be caused by excessive intake of potassium, such as diabetes mellitus and renal insufficiency. It can also be caused by the decrease of renal potassium excretion, such as renal failure. It can also be caused by drug factors, such as the use of spironolactone. It can manifest as arrhythmias, cardiac conduction abnormalities, muscle weakness, muscle paralysis, and other symptoms.

Low plasma renin activity may also have other causes, it is recommended to consult a doctor in a timely manner, complete the relevant examinations under the guidance of the doctor, to clarify the cause, and active treatment.
