2.1 Traditional Chinese medicine’s understanding of the causes of “atherosclerosis” Since the Qin and Han dynasties, successive generations of physicians have conducted a lot of clinical research on diseases and evidence such as vertigo, headache, stroke, gangrene, chest paralysis and true heart pain. They have not only accumulated rich clinical experience, but also established many valuable clinical medical theories. According to traditional Chinese medicine, the high-risk groups leading to “atherosclerosis” are: people who have a weak Yang Ming pulse; people who like to eat fatty, sweet and thick flavors, alcoholics; people who are obese, phlegmatic and damp; people who have excessive emotions; people who are leisurely and relaxed, not those who sweat from labor and hardship, etc. The etiology of the disease is “atherosclerosis”. The causes are divided into two categories: major risk factors and minor risk factors. The major risk factors include: the prevalence of the disease in middle-aged and elderly people over 40 years of age; the prevalence in men, and women often suffer from the disease after menopause; abnormal blood lipid content; increased blood pressure is closely related to the disease, and increased systolic and diastolic blood pressure are closely related to the disease. Reduced glucose tolerance is more common in patients with this disease. Secondary risk factors include: obesity over standard weight; stress, mental stress, and lack of effective physical activity; impatient, type A personality who is preoccupied with work without rest; having a “Western diet”; genetic factors; and vitamin and trace element problems.
