How long does it take to recover from facial palsy?

Facial palsy is mostly caused by facial neuritis. The facial nerve itself has certain nerve repair ability and usually recovers within 1 month to 1 year, but the self-healing ability varies significantly according to each person’s constitution, as well as the cause and degree of the disease, and if the injury is heavy or not treated in time, permanent sequelae may remain. In the acute stage of facial palsy, oral hormones combined with B vitamins should be used, and if necessary, antiviral drugs such as acyclovir can be added, and physiotherapy methods such as ultrashort-wave transthermal therapy, infrared radiation or local hot compresses can be performed near the stem mammary foramen. After the acute phase, Chinese medicine acupuncture and electro-acupuncture can be used to prevent sequelae. The prognosis is better for young patients with mastoid pain, diabetes, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, angina pectoris or previous history of myocardial infarction, and older patients with poor prognosis. Usually, about 80% of patients can recover within a few weeks or 1-2 months, and the recovery of taste sensation within 1 week suggests a good prognosis. Incomplete facial palsy can be recovered or cured within 1 to 2 months, while complete facial palsy takes 2 to 8 months or even 1 year to recover, and often leaves sequelae. In conclusion, facial palsy due to facial neuritis can usually recover within 1 year, but in order to reduce the occurrence of sequelae, but timely medical consultation, diagnosis and treatment should be provided to promote the recovery of nerve function.
