OBJECTIVE: To investigate the structural factors of the diagnostic criteria for DSM-IV binge eating disorder (BED) patients with OCPD. METHODS: A semi-deterministic diagnostic interview was used to reliably assess 211 consecutive patients with an outpatient axis I diagnosis of BED. Reliability and correlation analyses were performed for the eight criteria for the diagnosis of OCPD. Analysis of explanatory factors was performed to identify potential components. RESULTS: The Cronbach’s alpha value for the OCPD criteria was 0.77. Analysis of the underlying component factors using a maximum variance rotation (Varimax rotation) yielded three factor results (stereotyping, perfectionism, and stinginess), which explained 65% of the variance. CONCLUSION: The DSM-IV criteria of the OCPD are internally coherent. However, explanatory factor analysis revealed three components that may reflect significant interpersonal, internal (cognitive), and behavioral characteristics.
