Artificial livers can last from a few months to a few years, as they can only replace part of the liver’s function. The human liver itself has functions such as detoxification, metabolism, participation in blood clotting, secretion of bile, etc. If the patient has liver failure, he/she will need to use artificial liver for replacement therapy to maintain part of the liver’s function, and then undergo liver transplantation when the time is right. Artificial liver mainly replaces the function of the liver by blood replacement, but it can play a part of the function. Long-term artificial liver treatment may lead to bleeding, infection, hepatic encephalopathy, etc. Therefore, artificial liver can only be used as a temporary alternative treatment, and the period of time should not be too long. When undergoing artificial liver treatment, it is recommended that patients consult the hepatobiliary surgery department of regular hospitals.
