Highly challenging scoliosis surgery

Soon after his birth, his parents found that he had unequal shoulders, and in the past six months, the unequal shoulders became more pronounced, accompanied by an obvious spinal curvature deformity. The worried parents took Xiao Tang to a university hospital in Hunan Province and were told that the surgery would cost more than 100,000 yuan and that they would have to wait for a month before the surgery could be done. After a detailed examination, it was clear that Tang had a “congenital lumbar 2½ vertebral malformation with scoliosis”. Our colleagues in the department discussed the condition together and made a thorough surgical plan. On the third day after Xiao Tang’s admission to the hospital, Ben-Dan Lin and Yishan Hu performed “posterior lumbar 2 hemivertebrae resection and scoliosis correction” in close cooperation with colleagues in the operating room and anesthesia department. The operation took 6 hours, with only 800 ml of intraoperative bleeding, and was a success. After the surgery, the Cobb angle of Tang’s spine was corrected from 90 degrees before surgery to 15 degrees now, and Tang’s curved spine was finally straightened. The cost of the surgery was only 60,000 yuan. With endless gratitude to our medical staff, Xiaotang was successfully discharged from the hospital accompanied by his parents.
