What are the side effects of internal hormones?

Many diseases in dermatology involve the use of internal hormones (oral or infusion) for long periods of time or in high doses. Examples include aspergillosis, aspergillosis-like, lupus erythematosus, severe drug rash (drug allergy), acute eczema, eosinophilic skin disease, etc. What are the side effects of hormones? The main ones include: elevated blood sugar; elevated blood pressure; electrolyte disorders (e.g., decreased potassium); infections (e.g., oral mucosal fungal infections, lung infections, etc.); osteoporosis, femoral head necrosis; hypertrichosis, obesity, edema of the extremities, multiple folliculitis of the face and trunk, etc. Before administering hormones to patients, doctors will carefully talk to patients about these side effects of hormones so that patients can be aware of them. At the same time, we will help patients prevent these side effects by addressing the side effects of hormones. First, when starting high doses of hormones, we will give “bailout” medications, including potassium and calcium supplements, and medications to protect the gastric mucosa and suppress stomach acid. Secondly, when high doses of hormones are administered, patients’ blood, urine, fecal occult blood, liver and kidney function, blood electrolytes (potassium, sodium, calcium, chloride, etc.), blood sugar, blood pressure, chest X-ray and X-ray of femoral head will be monitored weekly. When side effects are found, appropriate treatment will be taken promptly, such as giving hypoglycemic drugs, antihypertensive drugs, anti-infective drugs, etc. Patients who need to use hormones for a long time or in large doses should not be intimidated by the side effects of hormones, nor should they say “it doesn’t matter, I don’t care”. Be conscious of your disease and the side effects of your medications, and try to face them openly and cooperate with the treatment. After the disease is under control, the hormone dosage will be gradually reduced, and these side effects will also be gradually reduced until they disappear.
