There are many treatments for ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), but in a comprehensive way there are only two aspects: pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments. Song Fengling, Children’s Health Care Institute, Jinan Children’s Hospital Medication is the most effective treatment modality proven to date. Medications for ADHD are divided into two main categories: stimulants (methylphenidate) and non-stimulants (tomoxetine). Among them, methylphenidate is a neurostimulant that acts as a therapeutic agent by blocking the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine by presynaptic neurons. Tomoxetine is a non-stimulant that singularly increases prefrontal cortical norepinephrine levels to achieve therapeutic effects. Medications have shown positive therapeutic effects in improving attention deficits, reducing activity levels and impulsivity, improving academic performance, and improving interpersonal relationships in children with ADHD, and are suitable for long-term use. There are also various non-pharmacological treatments, such as sensory integration training, EEG biofeedback, balancing device therapy, parent training and behavioral training involving the child. Supplementing medication with non-pharmacological treatments can help further consolidate and improve the treatment, and can further develop and consolidate good behavioral habits in children. It is worth noting that these non-pharmacological treatments are only available in certain well-known hospitals in China. Generally speaking, parents are more favorable to non-pharmacological treatment methods, and these we can understand and do not take a total negative attitude towards them. However, the final treatment plan is determined based on a thorough assessment of the child’s condition, and doctors are particularly cautious about the need for medication. Non-pharmacological treatment is generally slow to take effect, and some children may be delayed and miss the best time for treatment. Our doctors sincerely hope to discuss with parents to develop a treatment plan that is suitable for their child’s condition and easy to operate at home.
