How long do you need to abstain from sex after kidney stone lithotripsy?

The duration of abstinence after lithotripsy in kidney stone patients is related to the patient’s choice of surgical procedure, which generally requires 2-4 weeks of abstinence. There are three main lithotripsy options for kidney stones, including extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, ureteroscopic lithotripsy for stone extraction, and percutaneous nephrolithotripsy for stone extraction. If extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy is taken, the stones are crushed and discharged by using shock waves, which usually takes 1-2 weeks, and intercourse is allowed only after the stones are completely discharged, and the abstinence time is about 2 weeks. If the latter two surgical methods are used, intercourse is not recommended until the drainage tube is removed, as the “double J tube” is placed from the calyx to the bladder during the surgery. The patient needs to abstain from sexual intercourse for 4 weeks because the “double J” tube will be out for about a month. Regardless of the lithotripsy option, patients must pay attention to review and have intercourse according to the recovery situation after surgery.
