Is surgery necessary for common bile duct stones?

In patients with common bile duct stones, surgery is recommended as mandatory. If the symptoms are mild, it means that the common bile duct is not completely blocked and surgery is not difficult in this case; if the common bile duct is completely blocked, it will cause intrahepatic biliary stasis and systemic toxicity and requires immediate surgery. The surgical plan for common bile duct stones is determined by the type of stone. For bile duct stones smaller than 1 cm or single stones, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatic intubation is performed; for stones larger than 1 cm, open surgery or laparoscopic surgery is performed. When the bile ducts are completely blocked by common bile duct stones, it will cause intrahepatic bile duct infection and retrograde to blood toxin absorption, causing systemic toxicity symptoms, fever and toxic symptoms in patients, and in severe cases, it may lead to systemic multi-organ failure.
