I. Initial consultation
When we first saw the patient, he was white and colorless. He reported that he had developed cough and shortness of breath for 2 years, and the onset of coughing and shortness of breath continued for 3 months every year, often accompanied by coughing and sputum, which was clear. He was diagnosed as having chronic bronchitis at a local hospital, but after treatment, he had no effect and came to our hospital.
The patient reported that he had a habit of smoking and denied a history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus and drug allergy. The patient had daily weakness, spontaneous sweating, and easy to catch colds, etc. Through TCM examination, the patient was found to have a dark tongue with white coating and weak pulse.
Treatment history
The patient’s main manifestation of lung qi deficiency is deficiency of lung qi and susceptibility to external evil, which needs to be treated with Yu Ping Feng San with an addition or subtraction to nourish the lung and strengthen the surface. Yu Ping Feng San is composed of Fang Feng, Huang Qi and Atractylodes macrocephala. According to the patient’s specific condition, calcined dragon bones, floating wheat and Radix Codonopsis are added to the original formula. In the above composition, Astragalus can nourish lung qi, Atractylodes can strengthen spleen and benefit qi, Fangfeng can dispel wind and help righteousness to dispel evil, Calcined Dragon Bone can play an astringent and astringent effect, which is good for patients with spontaneous sweating, and Fructus Wheat can fix the surface and stop sweating, benefit qi and nourish deficiency. Through evidence-based treatment, the patient can be effectively treated, thus achieving better therapeutic effects.
III. Treatment effect
After 1 month of medication, the patient’s tongue condition improved, and he reported that his cough and asthma symptoms were relieved compared with before, and he had no discomfort while taking the medication. After 3 months of taking the herbal soup, the patient’s tongue coating was thin and white and wet, the pulse was flat, the weakness disappeared, and there was no excessive sweating, and the cough and asthma symptoms improved significantly. After taking the medicine for 1 year, the patient was followed up and reported that he did not have any more obvious discomfort symptoms, nor did he have cough and shortness of breath.
IV. Precautions
The patient’s lung qi deficiency evidence was relatively mild, and active Chinese medicine helped improve the condition. After active treatment, the patient’s symptoms were significantly improved, and I was sincerely happy for the patient. However, since the patient needs to use the medicine at home, the following points need to be noted.
1. If you have a casserole at home, you can cut open the Chinese medicine bag for decoction and pour it into the casserole, or you can use a stainless steel pot, but not an iron pot, and drink it after the medicine has warmed and rolled. If you don’t like the trouble of cutting it open and reheating it, you can also use hot boiling water to heat the medicine. Avoid taking the medicine again if bubbles and swollen bags appear in the herbal medicine bag, suggesting that the medicine has deteriorated.
2. Patients should pay attention to a light diet and avoid overeating during the medication period. Appropriate exercises, such as brisk walking and tai chi, can help improve the condition.
V. Personal insight
Lung Qi deficiency is mostly caused by chronic lung diseases, which deplete the lung Qi, or by deficiency of the spleen, which leads to insufficient biochemistry of the lung Qi, and the more common factors are chronic cough, chronic asthma, or other organ changes involving the lung, and the patient often has reduced functional activities of the whole body. The patient in this article is suffering from chronic bronchitis, and the duration of the disease is more than 2 years, and the symptoms of coughing, coughing and asthma are prolonged, which then leads to the depletion of lung qi and the formation of lung qi deficiency evidence, but the good thing is that the condition is improved through active Chinese medicine treatment. Therefore, when symptoms such as prolonged cough and asthma occur and treatment with western medicine is never able to cure them, you can choose the TCM method and ask a TCM doctor to make professional identification, so that targeted treatment with TCM tonics can be used to regulate the body’s qi, and its symptoms will be improved accordingly.
