Can cancer be diagnosed by finding cancer cells in pleural fluid?

Finding cancer cells in pleural fluid can confirm the diagnosis of cancer. However, the positivity rate of pleural fluid cytology is only 40-75%, so the diagnosis of cancer cannot be completely excluded even if cancer cells are not found in pleural fluid. In other words: finding cancer cells in pleural fluid can diagnose cancer, but not finding cancer cells in pleural fluid does not necessarily mean that there is no cancer.
