Cysts are a very common benign condition that is rarely painful in daily life and occurs mainly in the parenchymal organs, but can also occur in the subcutaneous tissue. The most common is a thyroid cyst, where the patient may find an anterior cervical swelling and may have uncomfortable symptoms when swallowing. If the cyst enlarges and compresses the trachea, there will be a sensation of gas pressure as well as noticeable after activity, in which case surgery may be considered. Depending on the size, cysts in the liver that gradually increase in size and compress the adjacent organs may manifest as abdominal pain or bloating and worsen after eating. Large liver cysts may also become infected, in which case surgery is also required, either by complete removal of the cyst or by external drainage.
