How should I choose a medication for ADHD?

The current drugs for ADHD are divided into two main categories: stimulants and non-stimulants. The stimulant class, currently dominated by methylphenidate in China, is highly effective in the treatment of ADHD and has been used to treat ADHD for 50-70 years. The results of numerous studies confirm that this class of drugs is very safe and effective when used in the treatment of physically healthy patients and under the supervision of a physician. The only non-stimulant drug approved by the FDA for the treatment of ADHD is Tomoxetine, which again, studies have shown to be very effective in treating ADHD. Some parents may choose non-stimulant treatment because of personal preference, or because their child has some comorbid problems, while a small number of children may choose non-stimulant treatment when it is not effective for stimulant treatment. Finding the most appropriate medication and dosage for your child’s ADHD treatment will take some time to try, and there is no way to predict which medication will be effective for a particular child without significant side effects. Therefore, if a child is treated with a medication that is not effective enough, the dose will need to be adjusted until the target dose is reached, and if the child is still not satisfied, a change to another medication will need to be considered.
