Is hyperthyroidism similar to anxiety disorders?

There are similarities between hyperthyroidism and anxiety disorders. Hyperthyroidism is a chronic metabolic disorder, which is a hypermetabolic syndrome caused by high concentrations of thyroid hormones in the blood. Typical hyperthyroidism is characterized by hypermetabolic symptoms such as panic attacks, fear of heat, sweating, hand tremors, agitation, and irritability. Anxiety disorders are neurological and psychiatric abnormalities. Patients with anxiety disorders can also exhibit symptoms of panic, mild tremor, agitation, and irritability. However, there are differences between hyperthyroidism and anxiety disorders. The main differences include the following: 1. Symptoms of anxiety disorders, such as panic attacks and rapid heart rate, get better after sleep, while hyperthyroidism patients still have rapid heart rate during sleep. 2. Patients with anxiety disorders do not have the enlarged thyroid gland and proptosis symptoms of hyperthyroidism. 3. Thyroid function tests of patients with anxiety disorders are normal, while thyroid function of patients with hyperthyroidism shows TSH is reduced and T3 and T4 are elevated.
