What’s the name of the bone in your chest?

The bone in the chest is called the sternum, which consists of three parts: the body of the sternum, the sternal stem and the raphe. The sternum is located in the center of a person’s chest, flanked by ribs. There are 12 pairs of ribs in total, which are symmetrical from side to side, and are responsible for protecting the internal organs, such as the liver, gallbladder, and heart, all of which are protected by the ribs. The position of the sternum is special, and when a lesion of the internal organs occurs, there will also be radiating pain in the sternum, for example, chronic gastritis or gastric ulcer will lead to pain in the middle of the chest. In addition to internal diseases that can cause pain, diseases of the sternum itself can also cause pain to occur, such as sternal angulation or costochondritis, intercostal neuritis can likewise cause pain in the middle. If the patient does not have any other abnormalities, he/she can leave it alone for the time being. If he/she has pain in the middle of the sternum and has frequent episodes, he/she is recommended to go to the hospital for further consultation.
