Does antiviral treatment with interferon have an effect on the fetus?

Interferon alpha has been shown to have significant reproductive toxicity in animal studies. Although there is no information on the use of interferon alpha in pregnant women, the possibility of its teratogenicity in humans cannot be ruled out. Interferon has various degrees of adverse effects on hematopoietic and neurological systems, and therefore should never be used to treat pregnant women with hepatitis B. Pregnancy is an absolute contraindication to interferon therapy. The latest Asia-Pacific guidelines for the prevention and treatment of hepatitis B state that interferon should not be used in pregnant women with hepatitis B. If pregnant women with hepatitis B need treatment, only human pregnancy class B drugs should be used.
